Last month, Zentive had the pleasure of inviting newly graduated Events Management student Isabel Joynes to attend the Meetings Show and get a deeper understanding and insight into the world of professional events. Isabel was kind of enough to give us a brief account of her experience at the tradeshow and what she discovered when chatting to venues and suppliers within the MICE industry.
"My first meeting was with Isla, who helped me to learn further about what the non-for-profit organisation offers. One area in particular, which caught my attention, was TRACE. This platform helps event managers to measure and minimise carbon at live, hybrid and digital events. Ultimately this tool is to help achieve net zero for future events.
Next, I visited the Manchester exhibition stand and discovered that Greater Manchester have set the target of becoming net carbon neutral by 2038. Manchester are offering event managers ‘Bee Net Zero’ which is a ten step guide to achieve a net zero goal. Green spaces in the city and electric transport for delegates are just some of the offerings from Manchester that event managers can take advantage of.
During my meetings, I also visited the Event Well stand, which helped me to collect my thoughts and continue my meetings. Event Well are a non-for-profit organisation which promote mental well-being friendly workspaces. Training and outreach training are also something that the organisation provides.
Next, I visited the Visit Norway exhibition stand which gave great insight in their efforts to be more sustainable. Green travel is one effort made which includes showcasing environmentally certified enterprises and products for consumers. In addition, Visit Norway have provided recommendations for sustainable travel routes as well as C02rism; a project which will measure the CO2 emissions from transportation by tourists in Norway. Therefore, Norway has great potential as an event or incentive destination due to the country’s travel considerations.
Overall, my visit was a valuable learning experience and a fantastic networking opportunity, and would recommend it for anyone starting out in the industry.”
